Meet The Winner of Our 2023 Baths for the Brave Contest!
At Atlas Home Safety, our commitment to honoring veterans stems from a deeply personal place. For co-owners David and Darian Bobby, the values of sacrifice and service resonate through their family history, inspired by their own relative, William J. Bobby, a WWII Navy veteran. It’s this shared legacy that drives their mission to give back through initiatives like the Baths for the Brave contest.
This year, we were inspired by the story of Brian Martin, a retired Army Sergeant whose bravery and dedication extend far beyond his military service. From his deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq to his tireless advocacy for fellow veterans, Brian’s journey embodies resilience, sacrifice, and a steadfast commitment to helping others. It was our privilege to transform his bathroom into a space that supports his needs and recognizes his incredible contributions.
A Life of Service, On and Off the Battlefield
Brian Martin’s military journey began in November 2004, when he enlisted in the United States Army. By April 2005, he was assigned to the 82nd ABN. Just months later, Brian deployed to Afghanistan, serving during a pivotal moment in the country’s history: its first election.
As the platoon’s designated marksman, Brian played a critical role in assault missions, while also serving as the Platoon Leader’s gunner during convoys. His deployment showcased his unwavering commitment to supporting the Afghan military and ensuring the success of their nation’s election. After months of service, he returned home in November 2005.
In November 2006, Brian faced a traumatic incident that left him injured. Just two weeks before his scheduled deployment to Iraq, he was shot and held at gunpoint while attempting to return to work. Despite the physical and emotional toll, Brian continued his service, staying on rear detachment during the Iraq deployment. As a newly promoted E-5 Sergeant, he prepared new troops to join the unit overseas.
During the 17-month Iraq deployment, his unit endured the devastating loss of 14 paratroopers. By January 2009, Brian’s military career came to a close as he was medically retired at the end of his original enlistment.
Taking on the Challenge: Transforming Brian’s Bathroom
When Darian and David of Atlas Home Safety met Brian, they were struck not only by his story but also by his determination to improve his life and the lives of others. Brian’s home, particularly his bathroom, had long been a source of frustration and limitation.
“Due to the age and style of the original bathroom, I would rank this bath project as one of the most difficult remodels I’ve seen,” Darian shared. “But once we met Brian and heard his story, we knew we needed to take on this project.”
The team worked tirelessly to transform the outdated and inaccessible bathroom into a safe, functional space that would meet Brian’s needs.
Life After Service: Finding Purpose with Ghost
After leaving the Army, Brian found a renewed sense of purpose through the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Over the years, he has held numerous leadership positions within the organization, including:
- Three-time Past All-State Commander
- Two-time Past All-American Commander
- Current District 4 Jr. Vice Commander
- Department Youth Scholarship Assistant Director
- Department Americanism Director
- Past National Aid-de-Camp
Brian’s dedication doesn’t stop there. He also serves on multiple committees at local, state, and national levels, consistently working to improve the lives of veterans and their families.
Today, Brian works as a County Veteran Service Officer for Washtenaw County, where he assists veterans and their families in securing the benefits they have earned. Whether through his advocacy or community work, Brian’s mission remains the same: to support and uplift the veteran community.
