Meet The Winner of Our 2022 Baths for the Brave Contest!
We’re thrilled to share more about the winner of our 2022 Baths for the Brave contest: Byron and Melanie Sufficool, a couple whose love story began at the Belle Isle Coast Guard Station in Detroit. This year, Atlas Home Improvement surprised them with a full bathroom renovation, as part of our ongoing commitment to support military veterans.
We are incredibly proud to uphold our tradition of honoring veterans in our community. Since launching the annual giveaway, it has become a true source of joy for the entire Atlas team.

A Shared Legacy of Service
For David and Darian Bobby, the owners of Atlas Home Improvement, honoring those who have served is personal. Inspired by their family members, including William J. Bobby, a WWII Navy veteran, they decided to give back to veterans through the bathroom giveaway, knowing the unique challenges they face as they age or deal with injuries from their service.

Byron and Melanie’s Coast Guard Love Story
The couple’s story was shared by their son, Calvin, whose heartfelt entry moved the Atlas team. He described how his parents met while serving at a Coast Guard Station in Belle Isle, where they worked together in a tight-knit military community. Melanie, a radio watch stander who joined the guard in 1993, answered many emergency calls, and even took part in a dramatic rescue operation that made the evening news. Byron, who was initially unsure of his future, was sent to Belle Isle when he joined the Coast Guard in 1995. Upon meeting Melanie there, their connection was immediate. While Byron had been upset over his placement in Belle Isle, he knew that he was sent there to meet the love of his life. Over 25 years later, they continue to share a bond rooted in their love for one another and their service to our country. Calvin Sufficool, the couple’s firstborn who entered them into the giveaway, was born on National Coast Guard Day.
As the couple’s family has grown, and with Calvin’s grandfather—a Vietnam veteran—facing health challenges, Calvin felt it was time to give back. He entered his parents into the contest, hoping to provide his parents with a bathroom that reflected the strength and love they’ve shown throughout their lives.
“This year we had well over 100 entries into our Baths for the Brave contest. Once we got down to the final 5 our Management Staff voted unanimously for Byron and Melanie who became known as the Coast Guard Love Birds.” – Darian Bobby, Co-owner
