Why Do Ice Dams Form?

Typically, ice dams form because the attic of a home has poor insulation and ventilation. This causes the roof to heat up, resulting in ice melt that runs down to the eaves where it freezes again. At Atlas Home Improvement, we can assess your attic insulation and ventilation and provide a solution. In addition to ice dam prevention, this service may even enhance the thermal efficiency of your home.

Ice Dam Solution – Gutter Heaters

Helmet Heat consists of a heated cable with a polymeric insulator jacket extruded over it, with a thermo-plastic overjacket over it for added protection. As the temperature drops, the cable responds by heating up to create a heated gutter, thawing the snow and allowing the water to flow freely through your home’s gutter system for optimal ice dam prevention. There are numerous benefits to Helmet Heat gutter heaters over regular gutter heat wire:

  • As a self-regulating product, the cables won’t overheat
  • There are no unsightly wires and installation requires no roof clips, the latter of which are typically required with standard heat wire
